Cy-Fair ready to spike the 17-6A competition

CYPRESS — Two players from the Greater Houston Volleyball Coaches Association’s preseason teams are also honored in the Cypress News Review’s inaugural volleyball rankings as District 17-6A preseason players of the year.

At the top of the region’s player charts is Cy-Fair’s Rebecca Portalatin, who was honored as the GHVCA preseason player of the year.

Namely, Portalatin is also the Cypress News Review’s preseason MVP and Cy-Fair’s Annalie Heliste is our preseason defensive MVP. Additionally, the Lady Bobcats filled our preseason offensive MVP position with Maddie Hrncir.

With the pandemic causing a massive delay for 5A and 6A teams, the 2020 season has a delayed start with teams able to play games no sooner than next Monday (Sept. 14, 2020).

Donna Benotti’s Lady Bobcats took the No. 1 spot with two-thirds of the first-place votes. Spring Branch’s Memorial High School was the only team receiving first-place votes, and we placed the Lady Mustangs as the No. 2 team in the district.

Everyone agreed on next four ranks: Cy Creek in the No. 3 position, Stratford filling out the playoff berths as No. 4, followed closely by Jersey Village and Cy Ridge in No. 5 and 6, respectively. The last two spots were split between Northbrook and Spring Woods, with the Lady Raiders as seventh and the Lady Tigers rounding out the league.

Methodology for the Cypress News Review rankings: Taking notes from publications such as Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine, we surveyed the coaches of districts 16-6A and 17-6A on their teams and the competition. As needed, we’ve applied decades of sports coverage to fill in any gaps and tie-breakers.
