CYPRESS — After a year with no tournaments due to the pandemic and tight safety restrictions, the 2021 Texas high school volleyball season’s first weekend has 41 teams from the greater Houston area battling it out on the court.

The tournament split teams into four-team pools per gym for the first day. At Cy Park High School, the Lady Cougars of Cy Creek are led by head coach Reagan Smith.

“So much learning and growth happens in tournament season,” Smith said via Twitter to the Cypress News Review. “It’s so important for our girls to get to play and grow together!”

Cy Creek went won their first two matches (def. Houston Westside 25-14, 25-22; and def. Cy Falls 25-16, 25-22), but slipped to Conroe College Park (25-22, 25-6) in the final battle of Day 1.

“We have a great starting point!” Smith added. “We will continue to work on refining the little parts of our game and learning to make adjustments as we get to know each other more. We have nine new members to our varsity team!”

As is common with giant tournaments, bracket play sends teams all over the area once the first day of pool play is complete. For instance, the Lady Cougars are slated for two matches at Katy High School, beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 13, 2021.
