CYPRESS -- The Jersey Village volleyball team overcame their CFISD sister school, Cy Park, during non-district action while on the road at the Lady Tigers' gym, 25-16, 25-11, 25-14, Tuesday night (Aug. 31, 2021). The Lady Falcons, under Head Coach Carrie Schneider, have earned an 11-8 pre-district record and have two more matches before league play begins for District 17-6A. Both teams start league play on Friday, Sept. 10, 2021. Cy Park getting up to speed After losing eight seniors to graduation, the Lady Tigers have only a single returning starter in De'stiney Dove. On paper, the Cy Park team has upperclassmen, but they don't have the experience of battling point for point at the varsity level. "We've been working on small things and our defense has gotten better since we scrimmaged a month ago," said McRae. "We're getting more touches on our blocks, and we're working on being more aggressive when we swing." The Cy Park coach complimented her team's quarterback, saying Kayla Huerta has done a fantastic job of running the floor as the Lady Tigers' setter in a 5-1 formation. "Consistency is going to be huge, and playing the whole way through," McRae added as being her team's keys to victory in upcoming league action. "This is a fantastic group, they don't argue with each other and are nice to each other. They're very coachable." Jersey Village tweaking offense Lady Falcon head coach Carrie Schneider knows her team plays best when the pressure is on. And come Sept. 10, it will be, as District 17-6A action begins with several perennial powerhouses will duke it out with Jersey Village. "We are sometimes a roller coaster team, so we play a lot better when we are put under pressure," Schneider said following her squad's 3-0 victory over the Lady Tigers on Tuesday night. She noted that her spikers play better in a faster paced game, but that's exactly the opposite of what Cy Park let her team do with a much improved defensive game. "We've got some work to do and they (Cy Park) put up a good fight against us. We have a few things to tweak before district starts." Looking at how her Lady Falcons have performed since the 2021 season began, "my middle (hitters) - Katie Roque and Sophia Burke - are doing a really awesome job. My defensive kids are always doing awesome ... they're getting to the ball and getting after it. This team is pretty solid, defensively." "This team is an amazing team and we have great chemistry on the court," she added. "I have a feeling they are going to surprise a lot of people."
