CYPRESS — The Leonard Brautigam Center was chosen by the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) and Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) to be included in the 2020-2021 Exhibit of School Architecture. The campus joins 47 newly constructed or renovated public education facilities selected and celebrated for excellence in planning and design of the learning environment.
Exhibit selections are awarded at the discretion of a 12-member jury consisting of school board members, school administrators and members of the Association for Learning Environments (A4LE) Southern Region. The juried exhibit announced Star of Distinction awards for excellence to projects in one or more of the following six areas: design, value, sustainability, community, planning and school transformation.
The Brautigam Center earned a Star of Distinction in both planning and school transformation.
The Exhibit of School Architecture is part of the 2020 TASA/TASB Convention, which will be conducted virtually from Sept. 30 through Oct. 2.
Originally the site of Matzke Elementary School, the rebranded special program facility opened in 2019 as the Brautigam Center due to funds in the 2014 Bond Program. Designed by PBK Architects, the center extends the life of a building that first opened in 1965.
According to the Exhibit of School Architecture, the Brautigam Center “was retrofitted into a high-tech school that responds to the facility’s new mission” and showcases a “collegiate-like personality” that concentrates on active student engagement, functionality and community. The school also offers CTE classes and additions with state-of-the-art technology.
“The Leonard Brautigam Center was a very unique, complex and challenging project to convert and renovate our old Matzke Elementary School to accommodate this program and any future expansion,” said Roy Sprague, CFISD chief operations officer. “The final design has truly exceeded our original vision and expectations and has opened up the doors for additional learning opportunities now and in the future for our students. By receiving these TASA/TASB Star of Distinction awards, it truly validates the efforts of our entire team involved in creating a facility that truly provides educational opportunities for all students.”
