CFISD earns 7 spots on TSWA All-State Baseball Team


CYPRESS — Led by Cypress Ranch High School graduates and pitching standouts J.J. Goss and Matthew Thompson, seven athletes representing four high schools were named to the 2019 Texas Sports Writers Association All-State Class 6A Baseball Team, released last week.

Cypress Lakes High School graduate Erik Garza (No. 15) was among seven CFISD standouts to earn postseason honors by the Texas Sports Writers Association. Garza was named to the all-state team, earning honorable mention as an outfielder.

Cypress Ranch High School graduate J.J. Goss was named to the 2019 Texas Sports Writers Association All-State Class 6A Baseball Team, joining fellow right-handed pitcher Matthew Thompson in earning first-team honors.

Goss and Thompson were both selected as the first team. The two right-handed pitchers helped lead Cypress Ranch to the Region II-6A finals where the Mustangs fell just short of a second consecutive trip to the UIL State Championships. Thompson posted a 13-0 record in 2019, also finishing with a 0.87 ERA, 124 strikeouts, 41 walks and nine earned runs, while Goss finished with a 11-2 record, a 0.64 ERA, 147 strikeouts, 28 walks and three complete games.

The two were selected within in the first 45 picks in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft in June. Goss was selected 36th overall by the Tampa Bay Ray, and Thompson went 45th overall to the Chicago White Sox.

Cypress Ranch graduate Jared Alvarez-Lopez was named as a third-team catcher.

Four others earned honorable mention: Jersey Village High School first baseman Nathan Becker, Cy-Fair High School shortstop Peyton Chatagnier, Cypress Lakes High School outfielder Erik Garza and Cypress Ranch outfielder Jake Hymel.

Cy-Fair High School graduate Peyton Chatagnier earned honorable mention on the 2019 Texas Sports Writers Association All-State Class 6A Baseball Team. The shortstop was among seven CFISD baseball standouts named to the all-state team.
