HARRIS COUNTY — According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, “on Thursday, February 4, 2021, at approximately 11:00 P.M., Mercy Morales H/F 22 YOA and her boyfriend, Victor Almanza H/M 18 YOA, transported Morales’ 13 month old child, Fernanda Morales, to the Signature Care Emergency Center, on State Highway 6. Morales and Almanza claimed the child fell from her rocking horse and became lethargic. The medical personnel at the emergency center determined the child suffered multiple blunt force injuries, not consistent with “falling off a rocking horse”. They immediately contacted Texas Children’s Hospital (Medical Center) and the child was transferred to Texas Children’s Hospital, via Life Flight. Early Friday morning the child was pronounced dead.
The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences (HCIFS) contacted the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and notified them about the death. Patrol Units responded to the original scene at the Lake Apartments, located in the 5600 BLK of Timber Creek Place DR. Homicide Investigators responded to Texas Children’s Hospital and made contact with the child’s mother, Mercy Morales, and her boyfriend Victor Almanza. Morales and Almanza claimed they were the sole care takers for the child and that the only injuries the child sustained, while in their care, was when she fell off her rocking horse. The preliminary autopsy results confirmed the severity of the child’s injuries were not consistent with ‘falling off a rocking horse”. Victor Almanza and Mercy Morales have been charged with Injury to a Child and placed in the Harris County Jail. The HCIFS and Sheriff’s Office investigations are ongoing.
If anyone has any information regarding the death of Fernanda Morales, they are asked to contact the Homicide Unit at 713.274.9100.”
