COLLEGE STATION — The Cypress Woods High School 7-on-7 football team led a contingent of four CFISD programs at the 7-on-7 state tournament, reaching the championship bracket quarterfinals of the two-day event, held June 25-26 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station.
The quarterfinals appearance is the deepest run for Cypress Woods. The Wildcats were making their sixth trip to the 7-on-7 state tournament, which culminates the spring season for the sport, a pass-only version of football without offensive and defensive linemen. Last year’s tournament was canceled due to COVID-19.
Other CFISD programs to qualify for the state tournament were Bridgeland®, Cy-Fair and Cypress Falls high schools. The quartet played in Division I, which began with 64 teams split in four-team pools. Following three pool games on June 25, the top two teams from each pool advanced to the championship bracket while the remaining two advanced to the consolation bracket.
Cypress Woods finished 3-0 in Pool H, while the Bears, Cy-Fair and Cypress Falls each posted 1-2 records in their respective pools.
The Wildcats picked up bracket wins over Denton Braswell (39-13) and Mission Veterans Memorial (28-19). They ultimately fell, 40-12, to College Station in the championship bracket quarterfinals.
Cy-Fair, which made its 21st consecutive appearance at the state tournament, won four games on June 26 to reach the consolation bracket final. The Bobcats beat Garland (29-22), Prosper (19-18), Mercedes (21-12) and Trophy Club Byron Nelson (34-27). They lost, 40-20, to Denton Guyer.
The Bears, which made their second straight appearance, won three games in the consolation bracket. The Bears beat Nacogdoches (13-0), Cypress Falls (31-13) and Dickinson (27-13). They reached the bracket semifinals, falling 32-27 to Denton Guyer.
Cypress Falls made its 16th overall berth and third consecutive appearance. The Golden Eagles beat Edinburg North, 34-20, to open consolation bracket play before falling to the Bears.
