CYPRESS TEXAS — Cypress Woods High School senior Sebastian Aguirre was one of the Houston-area high school students selected to receive a KPRC Senior Scholarship, sponsored by Texas Mattress Makers.

Throughout the spring semester, KPRC representatives travel to various high schools in greater Houston to surprise students with $2,500 scholarships to a college of their choice. Morning anchor Owen Conflenti surprised Aguirre during the senior’s forensics class and presented him with a scholarship Feb. 25. The giveaway aired during the KPRC morning news on Feb. 27. Aguirre was nominated by Cypress Woods college and career specialist Stephanie England.

“Sebastian’s commitment to Cypress Woods, his education, community and family made him a perfect fit for this scholarship,” England said. “He is a leader on our campus and embodies the ‘212’ spirit of giving your best each day. Cypress Woods is proud to have Sebastian as a Wildcat.”

Aguirre is heavily involved in volunteering and community service, not only through his involvement with National Honor Society and Key Club at Cypress Woods, but also working alongside his mother, Erika. She attended the announcement as well to add to the surprise.

Other recent KPRC Senior Scholarship CFISD winners include Angelica Aulbaugh, a 2018 Cy-Fair High School graduate, and Silvia Navarrete, a 2017 Cypress Ridge High School graduate and the first of three winners in 2017.

“Being chosen as one of the scholarship winners surprised me, especially when the news crew showed up at my fourth period, and I’m really thankful for it,” Aguirre said. “It meant a lot for me to be able to share the news with my family after all the support they’ve given me for the past 17 years.”
