HARRIS COUNTY – A Harris County grand jury has returned a felony indictment against Cameron Brewer, charging him with aggravated assault by a public servant in connection with the March 22 shooting death of Danny Ray Thomas.
Brewer was fired from the sheriff’s office in April after an internal investigation of the incident.
Brewer was on patrol when he saw Thomas involved in an altercation with the driver of a vehicle at the intersection of Greens Road and Imperial Valley. Evidence showed that Thomas was behaving erratically and walking in the intersection with his pants around his ankles.
When Thomas did not comply with Brewer’s commands to stop and instead continued walking toward him, Brewer fired a single gunshot that fatally wounded Thomas. He was unarmed.
“The brave men and women of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office hold our community’s trust as sacred,” said Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. “We wil l continue striving to earn that trust anew, every single day.”
