Precinct 5 deputies are proud to be making a difference in the lives of pets and livestock in the greater Houston area.
As the Harris County Animal Cruelty Taskforce marks its one year anniversary, more than 4,400 calls for service have been received and more than 11,000 animals have been investigated by Precinct 5 and its many partners in the taskforce.
The taskforce was launched a little more than a year ago as a joint effort of Constable Ted Heap, Crime Stoppers of Houston, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the Houston Police Department, BARC, the Harris County Animal Shelter, Houston PetSet, Houston Humane Society, Animal ER of Northwest Houston and drumBEAT Marketing.
Since its inception, the taskforce’s efforts have led to 359 animals being removed from harmful situations. More than 220 criminal charges have been filed and more than 500 citations have been issued as a result of calls to the new taskforce, either through 927paws.org or 713-927-PAWS. The most common complaints involve animals without access to food, water, shelter or in need of medical care. But we are also called to investigate abandoned and abused pets, and in some cases, tortured or killed animals.
There is still a lot of work to be done and we are looking forward to even more progress fighting animal cruelty in the future. If you suspect animal abuse, neglect, hoarding or torture, report it at www.927PAWS.org or 832-927-PAWS.
