Join the Hot Topic Talk on Book Bans Sept. 1, 2022
CYPRESS, Texas (Aug. 22, 2022) Lone Star College-CyFair’s “Special Series on Political Hot Topics” wraps up Sept. 1 with a forum titled “Freedom of Press and the Banning of Books Nationwide.”
Offering diversified scholarly insight to some of the most salient political issues on the community’s radar, this series began with “Guns in America – NRA, Common Sense Reform and Mental Health” in June and “Abortion Rights and U.S. Supreme Court Rulings” in July.
“Throughout history there have been efforts by various groups to censor ideas that did not fit with their ideologies,” said Librarian Tracy Williams. “While these efforts aren’t new, we are seeing a resurgence in requests to remove materials from schools and libraries as well as a great deal of debate over who should choose the materials available in libraries.”
Join Williams, and co-facilitator Melanie Steel, Professor of Speech/Journalism, to learn more about the legal and historical background to this issue and participate in an open discussion about how this affects schools and libraries.
This final forum, which Political Science Department Professors Miranda Ashworth and Dr. Heidi Green are co-sponsoring, will be held from 1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. in the Center for Academic and Student Engagement bit.ly/BookBans_FreeSpeech (passcode 711738) and email
