Join Discussion of Former Houstonian’s First Novel “Lone Stars” Oct. 27 at LSC-CyFair

CYPRESS, Texas (Oct. 17, 2022) Lone Star College-CyFair participates with an Oct. 27 discussion in this year’s Gulf Coast Reads common book selection of “Lone Stars”, the first novel of Justin Deabler who grew up in Houston.

“Lone Stars provides a modern take on the historical Texas novel,” said LSC-CyFair Professor of History James Seymour. “Readers can imagine the actions taking place in real locations around actual landmarks in Houston today.”

Deabler’s own life story begins as a high school dropout at age 15. However, he later continued his education attending Bard College at Simon’s Rock College and graduating from Harvard Law School. Now, living in Brooklyn with his husband, son, and two cats, he is General Counsel for the Queens Public Library.

Telling a story about a changing America, Deabler’s novel follows the arc of four generations of a Texan family with loves and losses and perhaps hope that power is found in empathy.

“This year’s Gulf Coast Read selection deals with themes of equity, diversity, and inclusion – themes that reflect the mission and values of Lone Star College and the Harris County Public Library community,” said Librarian Regina Vitolo. “We are thrilled to have Professor Seymour facilitate this important and timely book discussion.”

Gulf Coast Reads is an annual regional reading initiative with a goal of encouraging simultaneous reading of the same title during October and bringing people together in communities, neighborhoods, classrooms and libraries for book discussions.

Join LSC-CyFair’s interactive discussion at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 in the Regina.E.Vitolo for more on this event and additional LSC-CyFair book clubs available.
