CYPRESS TEXAS – When Cy-Fair High School Theater Arts teacher Candice Koern stepped onto the stage in the school’s auditorium, little did she know about the big reveal that was waiting behind the black curtain.
Unsure what was about to unfold, Candice was suddenly surprised by Cristina Kooker of KHOU-TV’s Great Day Houston, who appeared while live on the air to present Candice with the station’s Red Apple Award.
Sponsored by Ashley HomeStore, the award recognizes Houston school teachers who make a difference in the classroom and the community.
Candice was nominated by Brittney Greene, a student at Cy-Fair High School from 2005 – 2009, who today is a substitute English teacher.
“She is the reason I’m went into teaching,” said Greene, who was joined at the ceremony by several of Candice’s former students, including two who are theater arts teachers at the Cy-Fair High School.  “When I first saw the nomination online, she was the first teacher that came to my mind.”
In addition to receiving her Red Apple award, Candice was presented with a $250 check from Ashley HomeStore.  As part of the award ceremony, the local home furnishings retailer also presented the school with a $2,500 check to refurnish the school’s teacher lounge.
“I’m overwhelmed,” said Candice, now in her 29th year of teaching.  “And to have some of my former students come back for this, it really means a lot to me.”
