Morton Ranch Road wreck leaves one child dead


KATY TEXAS — According to police reports, on January 25, 2019, Rafael Quiroz was traveling eastbound in the 2250 block of Morton Ranch road approaching Elrod Road in a Chevrolet Camaro.

Jose Chavez was traveling westbound in the left turn lane of Morton Ranch Road approaching Elrod road in a Honda Pilot.

With Mr. Chavez was his wife Bernice Chavez and three children, Nora Chavez, Elijah Chavez, and Ella Chavez.

Mr. Chavez proceeded with the left turn to travel south on Elrod Road. The Camaro struck the right side and right back quarter of the Pilot driving the vehicle to the east.

Three-year-old Nora was ejected from the Pilot in the collision and was transported to Memorial Hermann TMC. She remains there in critical condition.

Six year old Elijah was transported to Texas children’s Hospital Katy in critical condition. A short time later Elijah died at the hospital.

Four year old Ella and both parents were transported to Memorial Hermann TMC where they remain in stable condition.

Quiroz was not injured. Quiroz stated he had a yellow light when he entered the intersection.

According to police reports, Mr. Chavez stated he had a yellow flashing arrow when he entered the intersection. This would indicate a failure to yield the right of way turning left on Mr. Chavez however, Quiroz was speeding over the limit of 45.

This crash is being investigated by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division.
