Recharge with LSC-CyFair’s Breathe and Read Yoga Book Club

CYPRESS, Texas (Aug. 29, 2022) Lone Star College-CyFair provides an opportunity to practice self-care with a combination yoga and book discussion this fall.

LSC-CyFair’s Breathe and Read Book Club is held bi-monthly with Dr. Jennifer Wyatt Bourgeois, who teaches criminal justice at LSC-CyFair and is a certified yoga instructor.

“All are welcome, no matter your level of yoga experience, if you have your own mat or need one we have for you to use, and whether or not you read the book in advance,” said Dr. Bourgeois. “We include a few minutes of yoga at the beginning of class allowing you a moment to exhale and become grounded prior to discussing the literature of choice for the month.”

The suggested reading for September, “Finding Me” by Viola Davis, is an inspiring memoir of her life-changing decision, acceptance and hope.

October’s “Sing, Unburied, Sing” by Jesmyn Ward is a fablelike novel with themes and unique perspectives on family, race relations, life versus death, songs and singing and relationships.

The November reading, “Take My Hand” by Dolen Perkins-Valdez, is based on true events of a whistleblowing nurse in post-segregation Alabama exposing wrong doings to her young patients.

This Breathe and Read Book Club at LSC-CyFair started as an extension of Pages and Poses that Dr. Bourgeois founded with the intention to amplify Black voices in literature through conversation while integrating movement and breath.

This fall’s yoga mediation and book conversations at the college will be held from 12:30 p.m. -1:30 p.m. in the library (LRNC) Room 131 Sept. 6, Sept. 22, Oct. 4, Oct. 20, Nov. 1 and Nov. 29.
