CYPRESS — While Cy-Fair has the District 17-6A volleyball title wrapped up, the Cy Ranch Mustangs are out to avenge a key first round loss to Tomball Memorial tonight in hopes of forcing a district playoff for the league title.
Tonight is the final match for regular season volleyball across Cypress. The district certification — and playoff seeding — officially happens Saturday, so if the Mustangs pegged Tomball for a loss, the two teams would be tied for first place at 13-2 and split head-to-head battles forcing a one-match playoff for seeding purposes. A rare in-district playoff would have to be played by Saturday.
Outside of the Cy Ranch – Tomball Memorial debacle, the rest of the southern district playoff berths are locked in. Even if Cy Springs played spoiler on the Lady Lobos tonight, Cy Woods lost both rounds to Langham Creek during league play.
District 17-6A’s playoff berths and seedings are stratified enough to know that No. 1 Cy-Fair, 2. Memorial, 3. Stratford, and 4. Cy Creek are locked in. The only turmoil in the district is over the fifth and sixth positions as Cy Ridge has the opportunity to get a split decision with Cy Falls. However, short of unexpected violations forcing the UIL to vacate wins, tonight’s match won’t affect the playoff picture from the north-of-290 district.
With the top four teams of every district entering the playoffs, 14-6A will send Tomball Memorial, Cy Ranch, Bryan and Langham Creek. They will battle the top four teams from District 13-6A in the Bi-District round. District 13 pulls from the Austin and Round Rock area.
The top four teams from District 17 will face off against District 18-6A, which consists of Houston-area schools such as Bellaire and the Heights in the Bi-District round.
The district champions are matched against their fourth place counterparts, and second place teams line up against the other district’s third place squads.
If the two Cypress volleyball teams from each district win-out their brackets, Cy-Fair and Cy Creek would meet in the regional quarterfinals to determine which team would enter the regional tournament.
Whereas, tonight’s aforementioned Tomball Memorial vs. Cy Ranch match could send the Mustangs further away from Langham Creek’s seeding in the bracket tree. If the Mustangs are district runners-up, then they’d meet the Lobos for the Region II championship. If Cy Ranch wins the district title, then they’d be paired with Langham Creek in the regional quarterfinals.
The next time Districts 14’s and 17’s representatives could see each other would be in the state championship on Nov. 17.
